PhD Cosmetology Scholarships Studentship Benefits Of Smoking Reduction

The Cosmetology Scholarships studentship will examine health benefits of a smoking reduction programme in people with mental health disorders. This group is highly suitable for harm reduction as they are three times more likely to smoke, are more highly dependent on tobacco and smoke more heavily than general population. The Cosmetology Scholarships student will collect and analyse epidemiological data on the occurrence of relevant health outcomes in the trial that might be influenced by smoking cessation or reduction. The student will conduct a systematic review to examine effects of smoking cessation and reduction on mental health symptoms and adverse events. The Cosmetology Scholarships study also includes qualitative interviews with participants who tried to reduce smoking to understand their experiences. The interviews will focus on the perceived effects that smoking reduction had on mental well being.

The Cosmetology Scholarships studentship will be jointly supervised by Dr. Taina Taskila, Prof Paul Aveyard at the University of Birmingham and Prof Ann McNeill at the University of Nottingham. The student will become a member of the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies (UKCTCS), a UKCRC centre of excellence in public health (http://www.ukctcs.org/ukctcs/index.aspx). The teams in Birmingham and Nottingham are leading on harm reduction, and have several researchers examining this area.

Cosmetology Scholarships successful candidate should have, or is expected to obtain, a master's degree in public health, epidemiology, psychology or other relevant area and preferably have experience of both quantitative and qualitative research methods.

SPAECO (Spatial ecology: bringing mathematical theory and data together) is a Cosmetology Scholarships project funded by the European Research Council (ERC; erc.europa.eu). It concerns research at the crossroads of mathematics, statistics and population biology, and it aims at understanding the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of populations inhabiting the heterogeneous and changing landscapes of the real world. The Cosmetology Scholarships project is lead by prof. Otso Ovaskainen, whose research group includes ca. 10 post doctoral researchers and post graduate students focusing on models of e.g. spatio-temporal population dynamics, animal movement, evolutionary quantitative genetics, and interactive species communities. Scholarships functions and duties of Fellows as members of the E. MA academic and administrative unit of the E. Lido work under the supervision of the Director E. - based in Venice MA MA program. Scholarships the position involves a combination of training and various academic responsibilities and procedures related to E. MA program.

Duties will include:

1. To as a reference model for current students. This task can be detailed as follows:

Requirements
Advanced Ph.D. candidate in a relevant discipline (ideally one fellow should be researching on Law and/or Political science with a focus on international relations;

the other fellow should have a research focus on Social Sciences and/or Humanities/ Philosophy of Human Rights or significant experience in a University environment;

team-working ability; excellent communication and group management skills;

mentoring abilities and understanding the needs and concerns of peers and students;

experience in working with academics in an international environment; excellent knowledge of English, including drafting ability.

• It is indispensable that candidates have a very good knowledge of MS Word (including use of forms, fields and tables) and MS Excel (including creation of worksheets, formulas and sorting). In addition, candidates should know already or have the ability to learn quickly how to use Adobe Professional (preparing and editing of PDFs) and other IT-related applications;
• Knowledge of Italian and possibly French will be a plus.

The E.MA Fellows selected will be required to take up full service starting from 29th

August 2011 until 31st January 2012. Gross salary per month will be between €2.500 and €3.000 per month, depending on qualifications and seniority.

About University Of Leeds:
The University of Leeds was founded in 1904, but its origins go back to the nineteenth century with the founding of the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831 and then the Yorkshire College of Science in 1874. In 1831 a group of young men established the Leeds School of Medicine which meant that medical students no longer had to go to Scotland, London or overseas to study.

Details:
A PhD studentship is available for research in the area of Internet Computing and Service-Oriented Architectures. The overall aim of the project is to produce methods and tools to enhance the dependability of virtual-machine based computing clouds. The student will be supervised by Prof. Jie Xu and Dr. Paul Townend.

Eligibility:
The PhD candidate should have or expect to obtain a first class or good 2.1 honours degree in Software Engineering related or Computer Science related field.
The PhD student will be expected to identify and formalise novel dependability requirements within hypervisor-based virtual computing environments, develop solutions to one or more of these requirements, produce a prototype implementation of the solution, integrate the implementation into an existing system (such as the iVIC system from Beihang in China), and perform evaluation via extensive experiments. The studentship is funded by an EPSRC grant and will start from 1st September 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidates should fulfil the eligibility criteria for EPSRC funding through UK/EU nationality and residency status (See http://www.epsrc.ac.uk) and is therefore only open to UK and EU students.

Value:
The studentship is funded for 3 years and covers Home/EU fees and maintenance at the standard EPSRC rate (currently £13,590 per annum).

PhD Cosmetology Scholarships Student in Fluid Mechanics with focus on Hydropower

Hydropower is the largest source of renewable energy in the world and account for about 20 percent of the electricity production worldwide. It is facing new technical challenges with the introduction of renewable energy resources, refurbishment of aging machines, adapt to climate changes and meet new regulations.

To deal with these challenges the Swedish power industry together with the authorities and universities started the Swedish Hydropower Centre (SVC). SVC is a competence centre for education and research within the field of hydropower, whose vision is to secure a knowledge and competence supply for Sweden, for an efficient and reliable hydropower production. Luleå University of Technology is an active member of the centre.

LTU offers an open position for a PhD candidate in the field of fluid mechanics in an exiting and growing environment using the latest techniques at the Division of Fluid Mechanics being part of the Department of Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering. The department is a world leading institution within hydropower research in the fields of fluid mechanics, rotor-dynamics and tribology. It has access to world unique facilities such as generic models, full-scale hydropower machines and corresponding models, computer cluster and advanced measuring techniques.

Project description

The project is essentially experimental and related to pressure measurement technique.

The project aims firstly to investigate rotor-stator interaction in axial machines of Kaplan type. Detailed unsteady pressure measurements will be performed on a Kaplan model at Vattenfall Research and Development, Älvkarleby, Sweden. Fluid conditions at and outside the energy efficient operation point are of interest.

The second part of the project aims to develop flow measurements technique for low head machines. Pressure time or/and hybrid ultrasound/Winter-Kennedy method(s) may be used. Experiments will be supported by numerical investigations.

The project implies close collaboration with Chalmers, Andritz and Vattenfall in Sweden but also the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway and University of Tehran, Iran.

Qualifications

Applicants should have an MSc/civ.ing degree within mechanical engineering or applied physics or equivalent. Previous experience in computational and/or experimental fluid mechanics is a merit.

Since male students are traditionally more numerous in this field of studies, female candidates are especially encouraged to apply. The position requires skills in written and spoken English but knowledge about French and/or Swedish is a merit, since our industrial and academic partners are from France, Switzerland, Canada, Sweden, and Norway.

A Wellcome Trust funded position is available for 3 years in the laboratory of Dr Sherif El-Khamisy to characterize the mechanisms of the repair of topoisomerase-mediated DNA damage. Oxidative stress and abortive activities of DNA topoisomerase 1 form a major source of DNA single-strand breaks, which are the commonest type of DNA lesions arising in cells. Defective repair of these breaks has been associated with hereditary neurodegenerative disease (El-Khamisy et al., Nature, 434: 108-113, 2005). Cells have employed different mechanisms to repair such breaks, including the hydrolytic cleavage of the phosphodiester bond between the stalled topoisomerase and DNA. The prototype enzyme for such an activity is TDP1, which is also involved in the repair of a variety of oxidative 3'-termini and mutation of which is associated with the neurological disorder SCAN1. Despite this important catalytic function fulfilled by TDP1, it remains together with the newly identified enzyme TDP2 (Ledesma et al., Nature, 461:674-8, 2009) the only known human enzymes that display this activity. Here, we will characterise and identify novel mechanisms for the repair of DNA topoisomerase-mediated and oxidative stress-induced DNA breaks, using a combined approach of yeast genetics, biochemical analysis, and whole animal studies. We will also define the impact of the defective repair of these breaks on neural cell fate. Candidates should have a PhD in molecular biology/biochemistry/cell biology. Broad experience in cell culture and molecular biology techniques is essential. Experience in qPCR, chromatin IP, siRNA, and yeast genetics is desirable, but enthusiasm and adaptability are more important. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a high level of motivation and ability to deliver high quality research outputs.

The Centre for Cultural and Creative Research (CCCR) at the University of Portsmouth is offering three fully funded PhD studentships. Each relate to aspects of the relationship between television and film culture in Britain:

a) Channel Four Television: Film Policy and Programming
b) Film Four: A Critical Survey of Sponsored Feature Films
c) BBC Films: A Critical Survey

Brief descriptions of these opportunities:

a) Channel Four Television: Film Policy and Programming

This PhD will provide an institutional study of Channel 4's evolving film policy in terms of its original remit, commissioning ethos and key innovations, and will produce a survey of its provision for film programming. The study affords considerable scope for the student to develop comprehensive expertise in a case study of contemporary media policy. The role would suit a post-graduate student who has an interest and/or experience in television history or media policy, and who is keen to develop research skills in archival work, experience in interview techniques and expertise in digital data-handling.

b) Film Four: A Critical Survey of Sponsored Feature Films

This PhD will build on existing literature in the field to produce an analytical survey of Channel 4 commissioned output of original feature films, combining close analysis of key texts with archival research on production and critical and popular reception. This project presents the opportunity to produce a comprehensive critical account of the output of a major sponsor in British film culture. The role would suit a post-graduate student who has an interest and/or experience in British cinema history or film studies, and who is keen to develop research skills in archival work, experience in interview techniques and expertise in digital data-handling.

c) BBC Films: A Critical Survey

This PhD will produce an analytical survey of the output of BBC Films from the 1980s onwards. It will consider policy, personnel and commissioning strategies, and will present a series of case studies of original feature films sponsored for television broadcast and cinema release. This project offers scope to produce the first comprehensive account of BBC Films output in relation to British film culture of the period. The role would suit a post-graduate student who has an interest and/or experience in British cinema history or film studies, and who is keen to develop research skills in archival work and experience in interview techniques.

The Construction Industry Training Board Design and Technology Scholarships

Doorways to Construction (D2C) is a Vocational Education and Training (VET) initiative set up by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) in conjunction with the secondary schooling sectors of South Australia. The program is designed to assist secondary students to learn about the skills in the building and construction industry and gives them the opportunity to experience the various career pathways within the industry.

In an effort to support the recruitment of interested and skilled teachers for the delivery of the D2C programs, the Construction Industry Training Board Design and Technology Scholarships will provide funds to assist students with the cost of the student contribution amount for a Commonwealth supported place for the final two years of the Bachelor of Education (Design and Technology) at UniSA.

To meet the scholarship eligibility criteria recipients must:

* be enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Education (Design and Technology Education) at UniSA
* be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia
* maintain satisfactory progress within the program in each half year, as defined by university policy
* undertake the third-year and fourth-year practicum placements for the program in a secondary school setting which includes working directly with a D2C program
* participate in a range of building and construction industry activities organised by the CITB including and not limited to site visits and undertaking additional courses in the trades skills areas
* complete the application form
Value: 50% of the student contribution amount in respect of the Commonwealth supported place, for the duration of the program

cosmetology scholarships Postdoctoral Research Associate in Mercury Biogeochemistry,Oak Ridge,Tennessee

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a highly motivated and creative individual skilled in biogeochemistry to work on a project investigating the effect of coupled geochemical, microbiological, and hydrological processes on mercury (Hg) transformations leading to the formation and destruction of methyl mercury in sediment-surface water systems. Current research at ORNL in this area spans from the molecular to the field scales although for this position work will be conducted at the laboratory microcosm to field scales. The integration of field, laboratory, and simulation research will be used to inform decisions related to environmental remediation and long-term stewardship of terrestrial and aquatic systems.
The successful candidate will focus their research efforts on understanding the geochemical and microbiological processes that control Hg transformation at an industrially contaminated site on the Oak Ridge Reservation. The biogeochemical controls on transformations that sustain methyl mercury concentrations in this system are poorly understood. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with microbiologists studying the genetic determinants of Hg transformations. Opportunities exist to collaborate with skilled researchers in hydrology, geochemistry, environmental microbiology, and ecology within ORNL, at collaborating Universities and other National Laboratories.

Qualifications:
This position requires a Ph.D. in environmental chemistry, (bio)geochemistry, soil science, or a related discipline. Experience in Hg research, applying (bio)geochemical models, and the analysis of kinetic data is desired. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. The candidate must have the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Travel Grants - The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting provides travel grants to cover hard costs associated with upcoming travel for an international reporting project. Our ideal project offers print, photography, radio, and video.

*We are not currently accepting submissions for video-only projects.

A common misperception of the Pulitzer Center is that we are primarily seeking "conflict" reporting. This is not the case. Our definition of "crisis" is broad. We see great value in covering the too often under-reported systemic level crises, from environmental issues and struggles for resources or human rights abuses, to post-conflict reconstruction, or brewing ethnic tensions. We are interested in the stories that would typically not make the headlines without our support.

Terms of travel grant:

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting funds international travel costs associated with reporting projects on topics and regions of global importance, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the mainstream American media.

The amount of individual travel grants will depend on the specific project and detailed budget planning. Most awards fall in the range of $2,000 to $10,000 but depending on project specifics may be as much as $20,000.

On approved projects, half of the grant amount is generally paid just before travel and the remainder on submission of the principal material for publication or broadcast. Specific grant terms are negotiated during the application process.

Eligible Candidates

Grants are open to all journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers or filmmakers; staff journalists as well as free-lancers of any nationality are eligible to apply.

Annapolis, MD. Say (AP) - responsible for education, inclusive education and students at colleges and universities, a record with an increase of more than five percent.

Maryland Higher Education Commission said in a report released Wednesday that profit is 17,641 students by the total number to 354,858 students.

Fifteen of 16 Maryland community colleges had a total income of the registration. The exception was Allegany College of Maryland.

Access to the University of Maryland system, 3 percent and the Morgan State University, 3.2 percent.

Arrangements for 2011

It is expected that the final date for receipt of expressions of interest from potential private sector sponsors for 2011 scholarships will be in mid December 2010. The firm final date will be confirmed in due course, as soon as it has been agreed with BIS who will be coordinating the private sector proposals to participate in the scheme.

Arrangements for 2010
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Research Councils recognise the importance for the UK of being able to attract the best international research students, and have agreed to continue to run a core paired awarding exercise for up to a maximum of 45 new scholar starts in October 2010. This exercise will of course be contingent upon finding the necessary private sector sponsors and being able to match them to available but limited Research Council funding streams.

Four of the Research Councils – BBSRC, EPSRC, MRC and STFC – are participating this coming year, so will be potentially sponsoring core paired scholarships in the areas of biotechnology and biological sciences, engineering and the physical sciences, medical sciences, and astronomy, particle physics, space science and nuclear physics. We will not provide scholarships in the arts, humanities, social, economic, or environmental sciences. Individual research councils will be responsible for agreeing which projects they wish to fund from their available resources, and they may not be able to support all the suggested company projects if demand is higher than the supply of training funds.

The matching of proposed PhD projects to research council remits and financial resources will take place early in the New Year, and grant letters to university research organisations are expected be sent out by EPSRC in April 2010. All current and forthcoming DHPA training grants will continue to be managed by EPSRC, acting on behalf of BIS and the participating Research Councils.

Experience has shown that most proposed awards from core private sector sponsors may be already strongly associated by them with particular research organisations, departments and supervisors, so research councils will be operating an explicit light-touch cross-check to ensure that scholarships are allocated to their most highly rated research organisations. Note there is no applications route operating for university research organisations because the determinant factor is the private sector partner’s choice of location for the awards at academic research laboratories.

Grants are for a fixed term of four years from October each year to provide flexibility for a three to four year PhD on average throughout their lifetime. The grant letter provides a net figure of £45,000 per scholarship for the particular research council contribution, to match the mandatory company contribution of £45,000. Each agreed project must fall within the scientific remit of the research council providing the public funds for each scholarship.

The training grant letter for DHPA is managed by the university itself, and does not directly confer resources to individual scholar supervisors. Accordingly, all prospective academic supervisors who are actively collaborating with potential business partners for DHPA scholarships starting in October 2010 should co-ordinate their award expectations with the designated DHPA administration contact at their research organisation. However, it is entirely the responsibility of the research organisations working with their private sector partners to ensure that the necessary 50% funding for each new scholarship recruited to any 2010 training grants is collected from the business to the university: EPSRC (and the other research councils) will not participate in any way in this financial transaction.

DHPA Report 2007
At the end of 2006 a survey was conducted canvassing the opinions of all the stakeholders of the DHPA scheme - the students, the supervisors, the university DHPA contacts, the sponsoring companies and the sponsoring research councils. They commented on how successful they thought the scheme had been, as well as the quality of the training and the quality of the students, and also made some suggestions as to how to take the scheme forward. This information, combined with student data entered through the Je-S online portal and a series of case studies, was used to write a report. You can view this report here PDF, 748KB.
