SPAECO (Spatial ecology: bringing mathematical theory and data together) is a Cosmetology Scholarships project funded by the European Research Council (ERC; erc.europa.eu). It concerns research at the crossroads of mathematics, statistics and population biology, and it aims at understanding the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of populations inhabiting the heterogeneous and changing landscapes of the real world. The Cosmetology Scholarships project is lead by prof. Otso Ovaskainen, whose research group includes ca. 10 post doctoral researchers and post graduate students focusing on models of e.g. spatio-temporal population dynamics, animal movement, evolutionary quantitative genetics, and interactive species communities. The Cosmetology Scholarships group develops both mathematical theory and statistical methods that can be used to link the theories to data. Ovaskainen’s group is a part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Metapopulation Biology (MRG) consisting of ca. 50 researchers and post graduate students. The Cosmetology Scholarships research environment is highly international and of multidisciplinary nature.
